UNITY PARTY Backs Buhari
The Unity Party of Nigeria has expressed its support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to withhold his assent to the amended Electoral Act passed by the National Assembly.
The party also faulted a threat by the Coalition of United Political Parties to boycott the 2019 General Elections if the President declined to sign the amended Electoral Act.
In a statement made available to journalists in Sokoto on Sunday and signed by its National Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Sokoto, the UPN said there was nothing to worry about with Buhari’s decision.
“The Unity Party of Nigeria is in total support of President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to withhold his assent to the amended Electoral Act.”
Sokoto said, “One wonders where the Coalition of United Political Parties was when the leadership of the National Assembly went for an unnecessary and unwarranted long vacation forgetting there was an Electoral Act waiting for the President’s urgent attention.
“Closing National Assembly for that long period of time indicated a deliberate attempt to either cause confusion or cast aspersions on the person of President Muhammadu Buhari or his government.”
The party urged Nigerians to be vigilant of the antics and actions of some politicians and political organisations planning to cause confusion.
The UPN also distanced itself from the activities of CUPP, stating that the coalition was nothing but a willing tool to be used by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, as partners in the act of propaganda and may be used for some dirty political actions and threat to boycott 2019 elections.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Unity Party of Nigeria is not among parties that endorsed Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate. Our candidate remains Alhaji Auwal Mohammad Wakil,” Sokoto, who is also the director-general of the party’s presidential campaign, added.
